Straight Out Of Camera Week 9 "Infinity Vision"

So this weeks theme was chosen by me! And once again when I was put under pressure to think of a theme I went with the first thing I was looking at! So "Television" was what I chose, and this weeks image took a lot of effort.

When I was thinking about this theme the first concept was to produce an image of someone looking at the goggle box and being immersed in the program. But then I remembered I already did this as part of my 366 project last year. Here is the image in question.

So I abandoned that idea and started thinking of a new concept. And that's when I came up with the image below. And yes it is SooC, and I'll explain how.

I wanted to create an infinity image. I'd normally do this using a clever piece of wizardry in Photoshop but obviously that's against the rules :-/
So to get this image and the infinity effect, I took a picture of me in front of the TV, then put that image onto the TV screen. Then I took a picture of me in front of the TV screen showing a picture of me on the screen photographing the screen ! Then I put THAT image on the screen, then took a photo of me taking a photo of me taking a photo of me......(repeat until insanity)

The only problem was that I had to crank the screen brightness right down to stop it blowing the highlights. If I'd exposed properly for the unaltered screen brightness I'd be about 3 stops underexposed. This meant a shutter speed of 1.6 seconds so I had to keep still for each new shot, not to mention sticking to the same pose.

So that's that.......Oh THE HAT ! it's just a cheeky little dig because I'm the only Brit in our little group of nutters that are doing this project ;-) Please check out their work using the links below, because if you've been following this project since the beginning you'll know they produce some amazing stuff.

  1. I like the hat, I need a new baseball cap.
I'm wondering, couldn't it have been easier to just set up the camera tethered to the telly? Of course, not the one you are posing with, it would have to be another camera behind you. Not sure if that would quite work the same or not. My idea also requires me make something that would be shown on screen and then me taking a pic of it. Though not in the same manner as you. Well done! Sounds like a lot of work

    1. Yes mate tethering to the TV and using live view would work in exactly the same way, with a single shot needed. However, I'm not currently in possession of the correct cables to tether to my TV, I can only do it with my laptop. :-)

  2. PiPiPiPiPiPiPiPi....... Well paused ;) That is a cool idea and I like what you did and a interesting solution to the problem. My first thought was ahh camera with video out hooked up to the TV and snagged a still image during the video out process. But than I started reading and figured it was a lot more to this than that. I like it well done, including the hat you big eared goone ;)

    3. Thanks Peter. It was quite a lot of work, but I'm quite enjoying putting the extra effort in to get these images straight out of camera. It's forcing me and the other guys to think much more about what we are doing when we go for the shot. Thanks for dropping by and the comment :-)

Wow Pete, you really pushed the envelope of the SooC concept with this image! I like it, I like it a lot. It's amazing what can be accomplished with some forethought and planning, which you are so good at. It's really hard to believe that you pulled this off without any post processing. You nailed the theme and came up with a great image. Very well done my friend!
I dig that hat too. ;)

    1. Thank you mate :-) The process I go through when planning shots is random to say the least, and I often end up making life difficult for myself :-)

  4. I like this a lot, Pete. It's one of those that makes you just want to stare and stare. The process your described intrigued me. I was going to make some jab like "GB...what's that stand for," when I saw the hat, but then you called attention it later in the post. ha ha.

    1. Thank you Bruce for your kind words :-) And GB stands for "Once we used to own your country but we gave it back because we couldn't be bothered with y'all " ;-)
