Straight Out Of Camera Week 2 "Boots"

The theme for the second week of the project which I'm working on with a bunch of reprobates was "Footwear"
But who would choose a subject that would lead to many "Weird", "fetishist", and "wrong-un" comments from the twitterverse ? ........that would be me then! When Chris asked me if I had a concept in mind when I chose this as a subject I said that forward planning isn't my strong point. The truth is that when I was asked to choose the subject I happened to be staring vacantly at the pile of kids shoes that protects my hallway floor from getting worn out !

So after setting up a shot on Tuesday night using said shoes....I hated it. The lighting wasn't great, highlights were blown, subject wasn't composed correctly and was dull and underexposed. This left me stuck for an idea. Until tonight when I brought my work boots home to clean off the shi mud and give them some TLC.

I seem to spend my whole life in Steel toecap boots. Since my first Saturday job at 12 years old as a gardener, right through college, as a Forester and now at work in construction. After a rough calculation it works out I've worn boots for about 8 and a half years of my life so far !

So that's what inspired this shot. these things are a constant presence in my life The slippers were added just as some quirky interest and as a texture contrast with the boots. This shot is obviously SOOC but I might play with this one later and post an edited version.

Here are the links to the rest of the boys taking part in this project, and unlike Eje the lazy bast bugger, I've used proper text based links rather than just copy pasting the address bar :-P  !

  1. I like this concept. It feels like these objects have life. They are not not inanimate objects, but have personalities. I might have shot it from a bit lower, to increase this effect. Almost as if you would be inside the boot print.

    Good job!

    1. Thanks mate. I did take one from a lower angle, but it allowed too much of the radiator into the frame and this one seemed to work better.

    1. Ha ha, I planned ahead mate, and used an old off cut of carpet, I'd have made it as far as the door before being hit by whatever she would have thrown at me :-)

  4. may I ask a question? just out of interest? Why did you not crop (In camera) the radiator out of the shot, just showing the line up of "boots" and the footprints ?

    1. The radiator is there to give it some context and so it was obvious that this was in a room and not a shed :-), and if by cropping in camera you mean framing it better then that would have been allowed. Cropping it using the camera is processing and therefore cheating :-)

  5. No, I did mean "framing" without the radiator. Thankyou for reply.
