Straight Out Of Camera Week 10 "Boys Toys"

This weeks theme was chosen by Bruce, and was "Automobile" . I have no idea what this American word means so I just assumed he meant Cars ;-) For this image I thought I'd try a new technique and light paint the vehicle in question. Eje has done an awesome shot for this theme "Make sure you check it out) with some studio lighting that produced some really nice highlights on his CAR, so I thought I'd paint mine with a softbox for some nice highlights. So here is my Nissan Skyline GTR in all its glory having been painted with light !

Nice isn't it !
The more observant of you will notice that all is not as it seems !
As I don't have the ability to crap £50 notes  have not won the lottery this car is out of my budget. But the 1:16 Scale Radio Controlled version of it that belongs to my son made a good "model" for the shot.  The new technique I was trying out is called "Forced Perspective" and it's a way to trick the brain into believing things are bigger than they actually are.

The image is still light painted, using a tiny little DIY softbox stuck on the end of my torch (Flash-light for the American goons)

I'm becoming very aware now of  how important Photoshop is in helping me realise the creative concepts that pop into my mind on random occasions. That's why I'm enjoying this project so much, because it's forcing me to come up with ways to get similar creative effects without the aid of post production. Couple of little things in this image. Firstly you can just see where the "fake" tarmac (asphalt) that I used ends, this was just a piece of black textured paper. And secondly if you look hard you can see the leg of my tripod because the camera was slung upside down below it so I could get it close enough to the ground. Hope you enjoyed the image, please feel free to leave a comment, and oblige me a huge favour and check out the work from the other guys who's links you can find below.

  1. Nicely done! I could tell it was a miniature, but not easily. Just because I know what those CARS look like. ha ha.
I don't even see the tripod leg you were talking about.

    1. Thanks Bruce :-) It's the wheels that give it away. 10 mins in photoshop and you wouldn't be able to tell :-)

    1. Thank you mate. I got some very funny looks and some horns honked at me whilst I was laying on the floor in the middle of a car park lol.

  3. Well done. I like it. Yes the plastic piece in the hubs of the rims sure gave it away that something wasn't quite right ;) Plus very dark tinted windshields with NO reflection at all.. If you hadn't said anything about the tripod leg I would just thought it was something "natural" there since couldn't tell it was a tripod leg.

When you wrote it was your car a Nissan Skyline GTR than I was going to call you a liar because either your a liar about being poor or your where lying about it being your car ;)

    Great work.

Post production I didn't realize what it would mean doing SooC as Chris suggested but in a way it is great because it ends up pushing us further on the photography and stop relying on post work and as I think it was Dave the other day that commented on I'm impressed with the quality of work that ya'll been manage to pull off doing just SooC.

    1. Cheers buddy. I agree about the quality of work that we're all producing. There's been some outstanding work considering there's just a week to think about things and plan then capture them.

    2. I absolutely agree about the quality of work that has come out of this project. And here's a prime example. I love this one Pete, the playful nature of the setup brings a totally creative approach to the week's theme. You killed it! And I wouldn't have noticed the tripod leg if you hadn't mentioned it, but it's not distracting at all. Really solid image, and as always, your staging is top notch.
I gotta get moving on my own Automobile, err CAR photo soon! ;)
