This weeks theme was "Wood" and after a rather amusing and childish conversation on twitter with Eje, I decided to abandon my original idea ;-) So after much racking of my brain and looking around the house and at work I was struggling to find anything of interest to use in my image. Then a chat with Chris on twitter in which he mentioned logs and a chainsaw it struck me that I have a well known chainsaw artist in my local area. I first met him whilst at college training as a forester so I though this would be good to find some of his work. You can find out more about him Here
So here's the image, its carved using a chainsaw from a solid piece of wood, and stands at the entrance to a local nature park. This shot was the second attempt. the first was a failure as when I got back home and checked it on the big screen the focus was well off.
There are actually three of these guys guarding the gate to the park, but with this been the land of Tea, rolling hills and absolute tossers the others have been vandalised. Please have a gander at what the other guys produce for this theme, because I really struggled to find something interesting.
What a shame that the others were vandalized. What kind of shape are they in sbs how old are they?
ReplyDeleteThe image looks good, though not much to it. Lighting and color alright. I guess not much more to say.
Not much to it is an understatement my friend, it's a re shoot for a start, and I didn't leave myself enough time to properly look at the subject. On top of all this, the area it's in is notorious for muggings, so I wasn't able to relax into the scene properly, it would have ruined someone's day if they'd tried to take my camera bag ;-)
DeleteI like the subject and the dof. I might have done something different with the composition. Getting closer or pulling back a bit... something a little like this perhaps. http://smu.gs/PAWo6H or http://smu.gs/1kff4Xp
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment John, and I agree about the composition, maybe closer would have worked well. Your stone faces series is awesome by the way, I love it :-)
DeleteChainsaw sculptures is just so amazing. Love checking out chainsaw carvings or any other type of carvings (wood, ice or stone) such amazing talent and skill to make it. I have to agree with the others on the creativity on the shot is a bit lacking and it surprises me a bit since I'm so used to see some very cool creativity from you. I think going lot closer and showing the wood grain and texture closer up and getting rid of the background completely would worked much better. But I know the feeling when you have to redo and reshoot and feel time is running out and you end up hurrying you get the f-it attitude. I ended up throwing up a few of those myself on this challenge and if it wasn't for the challenge I'm sure neither of us would published those images but felt compelled to provide that image.
